Wind Mill Power

Wind mill power is produced out of the conversion of wind energy into other useful forms of energy through the use of wind mills. Wind mills are basically designed to acquire wind energy to produce power. Wind is such a cheap, useful and unlimited source of power. As long ago as the 12th century people had learned how to harness it to grind corn and pump water. Today it is also being used to generate electricity. Wind mills are favored by most people because it does not harm the environment and it allows people to reduce their electric bills.

There are different types of wind mills. In the old days, wind mills consist of a tower-dome to which are attached four or six huge sails, sometimes these are covered with canvas. They are also kept facing the wind either by rotating entire large tower or by moving the dome to which the sails are attached. This is done by hand or by a rudder or vane which automatically shifts the dome when the wind veers. Afterward wind mill electricity generators were built.

Today the modern wind mills or popularly called as wind turbines are of two types. One is the horizontal axis wind turbine and the other is the vertical axis wind turbine. The horizontal axis wind turbine is a kind of wind turbine that is designed like the original wind mill in the past. The two key differences between horizontal and vertical axis wind turbines are how the main rotor shafts are arrange and where the generators are placed. Rotor shafts include the blades which turns the wind energy to wind mill electricity. The main rotor shafts of these turbines are arranged differently. In vertical axis turbine, the main rotor shaft is arranged vertically while the main rotor shaft of the horizontal axis turbine must be pointed into the wind. In horizontal wind turbines, the generator is placed at the top of the tower while the vertical axis wind turbine’s generator can be placed near the ground where it is more accessible Other than the rotor shaft and the generator, a wind mill turbine will not stand on its own without a tower. As a whole, there are three basic components of a wind mill: the rotor shaft, the generator and the tower.

In the beginning, these wind turbines are built in larger, more expensive turbines but today smaller wind turbines are built and utilized in most people’s backyards. Smaller wind turbines are easy to build, cheap and can provide enough wind mill electricity to power basic home appliances (refrigerator, television, electric fan and more).

Wind mills possess several benefits for everybody but there are also people who do not approve of it. The noise created by turbines has been mentioned as a problem. Birds have been killed by these wind turbines. Also wind doesn’t always come in one place on top speed so there would be times that your wind turbine will produce less power. Other than these troubles, wind mill power has been an effective provider of energy to most people.
