Before you think about the tools needed to build a shed, you need to have a detailed set of shed plans in front of you so that you know what you are building. The shed plans will have all the detail you need to draw up an inventory of the tools you will need to complete the job.

When we built our shed, I took my set of plans to the local builders merchants and I asked one of the assistants there to have a look at them for me and give me an idea of the tools I would need. I did not want to impose too much on his time, but I thought the least I could do as a reward for the information given, was to buy the tools I needed from his store.

Obviously he could not think of everything I might need, but he told me the basic set of tools he thought I could not manage without. These included, a circular saw, a hammer, electric drills with various sizes of drill bits, a set of step ladders, screwdrivers, pliers, spirit level, tape measure, protective gloves and goggles, staple gun and an assortment of mastics to bond materials together.

I realized this list was not totally complete, but it gave me the head start I needed to begin the job. Some of these tools I already had, others I bought. The last thing you want when you start any woodworking project of this nature, is to keep having to go out buying tools you should already have.

I had arranged for two friends to take care of the foundations for me so I did not have to worry about the equipment and materials needed to lay them.

As it turned out, I had pretty much bought all the equipment I needed to complete the shed, and buying those tools meant I had also increased the number of tools at my disposal, so I was well placed to tackle jobs of a similar nature without having the expense of having to buy even more tools for future projects.
