Tips on Reducing your Electricity Bill
The first step is the easiest step to reduce your electric bill and the most commonly heard: Turn off the lights! It’s true, households who keep the lights off during the day and when not at home end up saving a lot more per month. Times those savings by twelve and you’ve earned back a pretty penny! That’s a lot of savings just for being careful and making sure to hit that switch when you step out. Likewise if you live in a home with a lot of windows and the sun happens to be out do you really need to have the lights on? In terms of lighting, another way to save is to use greener light bulbs which use up less of a charge and therefore save you even more!
Another thing that really racks up the bill, most likely during a sweltering summer is air conditioning. People tend to just leave their air conditioner on all the time, even when they aren’t home! It’s definitely a good feeling to come back into a cool house from a long day of work during a hot day, but the reality is that you don’t need to leave your air conditioner running all day. Just turn it on right as you get home and save yourself some money and reduce your electric bill.
Power hogging electronics also add to the bill. Culprits include plasma TV’s, game systems and computers. One thing to do is to have a lot of your heavy duty power hogging electronics connected to a safe and heavy duty surge protector. That way you can shut them all off at once when you are done and not draw any more unnecessary electricity. Most people would be surprised to know that if they simply just unplugged their electronics instead of just turning them off onto standby mode that they would actually save some money and help towards our environment.
Like anything else that you can do monthly to reduce your electric bill, all the savings from these separate methods will add up to give you a nice chunk of money that will multiply by twelve times over a year. For large families in large homes whose bills are pretty expensive, this can mean a huge difference! For young adults in their first two room apartment, this maybe not so much of a change. But hey, even they can take the initiative too, if for anything just to draw less power and be greener towards our emissions will help to reduce your electric bill.
