Is Remodeling A Basement Rigth For You?

Basement remodeling could be an intimidating notion, but it’s an area of interest that comes up frequently when you get a new home.   It could be a pricey endeavor that could be very beneficial, if done the right way. There a couple of things you should think about when you decide remodeling a basement is right for you. For starters, in these tough economic times the values of homes are dropping at an alarming rate.  If you are trying to sell your home one must try to persuade the buyer the best way they can. But not that many people spend the time or the money remodeling a basement, therefore making your home more desirable to future buyers. Having a fully remodeled basement can dramatically increase your property value. This means that you can not only recover the money you will spend on the basement, you could also make a possible profit.

Existing problems

The number one thing you must do when you decide that remodeling a basement is right for you is to assess your basement. Find out any existing problems that you may have so you can spend your money the best way possible.  Look for leaks, holes, mold on walls and any water damage that might have happened in the past years. Don’t forget to check out the temperature of the basement; is it too hot or too cold?  Trying to take care of the existing problems will prevent damages to your new basement and ensure that your property value goes up and make the project run smoother.

Chose good flooring

Picking what goes in your basement can be quite overwhelming. For floors you have the option of choosing hardwood, ceramic tile or carpet. Hardwood floors are the best choice for it gives an extravagant appearance at is often considered luxurious. There are two options to consider when choosing hardwood, natural or synthetic hardwood.  Both are brilliant and can survive substantial water problems. Ceramic tiles is the second best for it has a stylish appeal and most designs can be quite attractive, it is also good if you have a basement that suffers from constant leaks or floods. Finally there is carpeting, which is very popular among a bunch of people, however it can cause some problems. The only option I would advise you not to take is concrete. It does not look good and it is unpleasant to walk on. It gives the basement a low quality look that you do not want. The materials you chose are very important so please pick them with care.

Be aware of darkness

Lighting is very crucial if you have a dark basement.  It should be your highest priority when remodeling a basement.  It would be a good idea to install some sun lights that would mimic natural sunlight. You can try to install some small basement windows; this will give extra brightness to the room.  Try to paint the drywall in light and neutral colors that are pleasing to the eyes.  You want to create a pleasant space.  A lot of people make the mistake and paint the basement a dark color, hoping to make it edgier and unique only resulting in making it look murky and smaller than it really is.

You want to make the basement as comfortable and bright as possible for potential buyers.

Using some of these ideas with flooring and lighting will ensure that your home has a good chance of selling and also creating a loving and relaxed environment that you and your family can enjoy.
