How to Maintain Energy Efficient Plumbing

Saving energy by using energy efficient light bulbs and appliances is a way of life anymore, but many people don’t think about saving energy with energy efficient plumbing. By properly maintaining your plumbing, you can not only save energy and money, but you can do it without spending a ton of money on new appliances. Below are a few steps you can follow to maintain your plumbing efficiently.

Step 1

Inspect all visible connections on and around your water heater. If you see any sign of trouble, it is best to catch them early so that they can be repaired. Water heaters can be quite expensive, so it is best to repair the issue before it gets out of hand and the appliance has to be completely replaced.

Step 2

Replace worn toilet flaps and valves. Once they are replaced, flush the toilet and check to make sure the fill valve completely shuts off. If not, try adding food coloring to the tank. If after a half-hour or so, you do not see any color in the bowl, your seal is working.

Step 3

Inspect all of the drain pipes under the kitchen sink, in the bathroom and under utility sinks. Use a flashlight to check for signs of water damage and/or mineral growth, especially at the fitting and joints. These discolorations can mean that the pipes are susceptible to rust.

Step 4

Schedule regular inspections from a Long Island plumbing company of your plumbing about once per quarter. If any maintenance needs to be done, catching it early can not only save energy by keeping your machine in top condition, but it can save hundreds of dollars in maintenance costs later.

Step 5

Don’t forget to check for leaks in crawl spaces or in the basement. Check for leaks under your appliances also.  Under your dishwasher, or washing machine and behind the refrigerator are all notorious for catching plumbing leaks from these appliances. Where ever there are drain or water lines, you will need to check on a regular basis.

Tips:

It is especially important to maintain your plumbing in the winter time when lines are susceptible to freezing. Properly insulating your water lines before the cold weather hits can save hundreds, even thousands of dollars in repair costs should pipes freeze and burst.

If at all possible, hire a professional plumber to come out and check all of your water lines and appliances once per year.
