FAQ’s When Building From Storage Shed Blueprints
I get a lot of questions from people building from storage shed blueprints. Below I have listed the most common ones:
1. Do I need a building permit for my storage shed?
The short answer is “yes, you do need to get a building permit.” This applies regardless of the size of the shed. First of all, you need a permit because the building inspector will want to make sure that the structure is built to code. This is done to ensure that the storage shed is safe. Second, the inspector will want to make sure you are not building on a property line. And finally, if you do not get the proper permits, you risk having the county come and make you take down your shed.
2. Where should I put my shed in our yard?
This depends on a couple of things, but here are some general guidelines:
- Don’t build where water can collect. For example, in a lowlying area or at the bottom of a hill. This will shorten the life of the shed tremendously
- Make sure you follow any setback guidelines from your local building office
- Keep it close to the house so that it is easy to get your stuff in and out of the shed
- Keep it out of the shade so that it drys out in the sunlight. The shade will cause it to stay damp, which can rot the wood quickly
3. What type of foundation should I use?
Ultimately this will be decided by your local building inspector, but there are generally 2 types: On-grade and permanent. On-grade are built directly on the ground and are for smaller sheds (up to 200 square feet). Permanent are for larger structures and typically have poured concrete.
These guidelines should get you off to a good start before building from your storage shed blueprints.
