Do It Yourself Projects

My significant other and I – and by this I mean my sister who is, statistically speaking, my significant other if you take into account all the time we spend with each other – are at war.  Sort of.  Well it’s more like friendly competition, to be precise.  What my sister and I are actually doing is trying to outdo each other in the do it yourself department: practically everything in our homes are do -it yourself products.  I assembled my own living room set, and she made the set of bookshelves that you could find scattered in every part of her house (she’s an avid reader of any topic at all).  We both painted our own walls, and we installed our own carpets.  Of course, the products of our labors were not without flaws – and we would often call each other out on it.  What matters to us is to do things better than the other.  Of course, it drives our respective house mates nuts – in my case, it’s my best friend (read: dog), Kris, who keeps bumping on something strange and new and frightening, and in my sister’s case, it would be her fat cat Samwise, who could never really claim the house as his domain because of the constant redecoration.

Tomorrow, I’ll start working on making that baby crib for our brother Frankie (who will be having a baby girl a few months from now), while my sister works on the chest in which the baby’s toys will be kept.  My sister and I will not be talking; we will be working with our hands.  But strangely, it is this very fact that connects us: we truly are siblings.
